Growing up I had mixed feelings about the Proverbs 31 woman. The standards she set out for us were somewhat pushed on us. People would use the tag so proudly “I AM PROVERBS 31 WOMAN” you know what I am talking about.
My mixed feelings about it were firstly, she is married with kids. Secondly, it is a standard set out for men when looking for a wife.
I took it as it was not addressed to me! I didn’t think I wanted to get married, lol I was on off on that idea. And I didn’t get why people would put such a measuring stick on being a noble and virtuous woman.
Until I realised, I looked at it in a negative – offensive manner. That was probably because I didn’t think her traits or characters were achievable by a normal girl, like me.
The moment I made peace with her and her characters and turned the negative/offensive approach into a challenge I can with certainty say I am learning and growing.
The Proverbs 31 women is confident, admirable and has so much we can actually learn from her. Let’s take a look…
She is Confident
The Proverbs 31 woman is confident, self-assured and absolutely capable. The Bible says the husband goes out in the city gate and leaves her to care for everything. He has confidence that she will keep it together. I had to affirm this in my life, because sometimes I would feel like I didn’t have everything together.
2. She is Not a Pushover
She is not a passive or weak woman. I know you probably going to think I’m making a very feminist point here. I recently posted something on Facebook of how the world has made “us” speaking up look like rebellion or hate, I didn’t put it in those exact words. That is the essence of what the post meant speaking up or disagreeing is not hate. Not allowing yourself to be push around or not conforming to whatever ideology people think you need to have, is powerful! Be Firm!
3. She Prioritizes Her Family
“She rises also while it is still night and gives food to her household…” Proverbs 31:15 AMP
She is up early and caring for her family. Waking up early before the rush and buzz of the house, not only gives you more hours but, starting early with God gives you direction for the day ahead. She sets her family at the top of the to-do list each day. Her priorities are in line with a beautifully balanced life.
4. She is a relentless Entrepreneur
“She goes to inspect a field and buys it; with her earnings she plants a vineyard”-Proverbs 31:16
“She makes sure her dealings are profitable; her lamp burns late into the night…”- Proverbs 31:18
The Proverbs 31 woman is a relentless entrepreneur, I mean she has her stakes in different industries. She is in Agriculture, Property to Retail. This point always ate at me growing up… I couldn’t get how she would care for her household and still be in business, Now that I have a acquired knowledge and with the development of virtual assistance I understand why she was so efficient she delegates work to other (Proverbs 31:15) she knows well to not keep all the work to herself, she is wise I tell you!
5. She Is Resourceful
“She finds wool and flax and busily spins it. She is like a merchant’s ship brining her food from afar”- Proverbs 31:13-14
She wants the best and searches for it. She aims to provide the best quality for her clients. Being resourceful for me it is buying winter clothes in spring, others is buying things on discount, some is doing it themselveves like planting their own veggies in their garden.
6. She Takes Care Of Her Health
“She equips herself with strength [spiritual, mental, and physical fitness for her God-given task] and makes her arms strong”-Proverbs 31:17 AMP
I know the verse is not explicit about the healthy part in other Bible translations, but think about it, she is up early in the morning, takes care of her household, works her field, makes clothes and sells them and still energetic and she is strong. You know she gets the right things in the body! Amplified Version says “she equips herself” think about in all the areas of her being, the spiritual, the mental and physical.
7. She Shares Her Success
“She opens and extends her hand to the poor, and she reaches out her filled hands to the needy.” – Proverbs 31:20 AMP
She does not halt her wealth, energy and herself to the needy. She gives out help. She is definitely a daughter after her Father’s heart. Her Godly character shines through in her deeds.
The one thing I have been working on in being the relentless woman is that:
She is Secure in Her Future
Personally, I think this kind of security is not from the material acquisitions but she knows that Jesus is her source and that even though she works so hard and she is successful God has secured her future! I need to trust more on this this truth!
These are achievable, the pressure comes when we try to be exactly like her, were as we should yield ourselves to God and only take her as a set example but strive to be our own person, growing at our own pace and walking our individual lanes.
