Self – Confidence: Watering the seed of Confidence

“My heart is confident in you, O God…”- Psalms 57:7 (NLT)

I am not a big fan of the word self in Self-Confidence so I call it Godfidence instead.

Confidence is something that is build or grown. Like the mustard tiny seed, we have to grow it! Where do I even begin?

The world or external factors have a way of strangling that confidence seed or plant if you may. For example, social media! Yes! We use it for our advantage to communicate faster, grow our businesses and so forth. We start growing envy from what other people have, their achievements in that we start losing ourselves and focus.

I had not been watering my seed of confidence in my last years of High School. I fell pregnant in my grade 11, I was a devoted Christian by that time already so, you can imagine the condemnation that followed and not only from external people but mostly from myself! I know what you are thinking, how does falling pregnant have to do with confidence!

Well, I sought validity from external factors; which meant I didn’t know the power I possessed. I wanted to FEEL like I was part of something everyone one is doing. So, I started dating out of necessity and made not so good friends. (That’s a topic for another day).

LET’S START WATERING

Growing confidence may take a while, but no seed grows over night after all! For me, it started with forgiving myself. That meant I had to approach God’s throne room and obtain His mercies [Hebrews 4:16]. Perhaps your knock of confidence came from hearing negative things about you said by people, or perhaps a false rumour about you! Here is a couple of things you can do to grow and revive your confidence.

THREE THINGS TO GROW YOUR CONFIDENCE

· Stop comparing yourself to others

· See yourself in God’s eyes

· Affirm who you really are

STOP COMPARING YOURSELF

Simple enough right? No! sometimes you find yourself doing it without even taking notice of it. The socials are the simplest example. I start off as liking a post or making a positive comment of a graduation picture then it slowly moves to coveting. www.dictionary.com defines coveting as “to desire wrongfully, inordinately something…” coveting might as well be envy! The is a connection between envy and the way you feel about yourself, because in envy you tend to look down on yourself. So take notice that you don’t find yourself coveting or comparing yourself.

SEE YOURSELF IN GOD’S EYES

God loves you! He wants you to live in the confident of that very thing! Start accepting that, believe it. He views you as a beautiful, compassionate and capable person. Don’t believe anything contrary to how God views you! To find out how God sees you it will need you to invest your time in studying your Bible know the Word of God for yourself, that is where you will water that confidence. You will begin to get the revelation of who you really are!

Pastor Nicole Crank says in one of her blog posts; What You Say About Yourself “we say what we hear and then we have what we say!” (www.nicolecrank.com)

AFFIRMING WHO YOU REALLY ARE

Write down as many as you can the things you studied in the Bible concerning how God views you.

Then start watering! A great form of watering confidence could be to say aloud all those good things every morning when you wake up or on your way out. Another cool thing, something I personally do, I record myself saying those affirmations and throughout the day I listen to them. As long as you constantly hearing and saying those things that God says you are…confidence will begin to grow.

“affirmations are a powerful tool to deliberately instil desired beliefs about yourself”- Nikki Carnevale
